"There is a lack of continuity with the processes and information the people on the floor have. I would make it more cohesive."

"Certain areas are geographically isolated. Don't expect to do marketing outside of Columbus. Same goes for nearly any leadership level above director."

"Leaders are promoted based on experience, not vision or qualifications. Lack of middle manager strategic discipline."

"Product differentiation. Something no one would/could copy until we it was too late to catch up."

"Not a big fan of the method of compensation. Caters more to the median performer."

"Try to identify talent and grow it. Also try to make the pay match the performance and not bring everything down to a a common band based compensation system."

"The Incentive plan structure was not well managed in order to get the commission pay."

"To learn more about the system applications in order to have a clear and accurate answer for the sales employees."

"There's an emerging Lean / Agile / Six Sigma movement within the company, and it's breathing new life into the IT department."

"If you're early in your career, Nationwide is a great place to go. If you're say 15 years in or so, it's not so great."

What don't you like about working at Nationwide Insurance?

"There's too much red tape to get even the simplest things done. No one is incentivized to do the right thing, and everyone is incentivized to do things right. Senior management in IT never gets their hands dirty, and consequently often has no idea what's actually going on. Waaaaay too much focus on job descriptions and way too little focus on making sure the customer is being taken care of FIRST."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would immediately put the entire company through Lean / Six Sigma / Agile training, and make it VERY clear that you can either get on the bus right now, or you will be run over by the bus. Enough fooling around trying to make 20,000 people with vested interests in the status quo happy."

"Be professional, dress professional, come prepared, speak intelligently, as questions, be very interactive and upbeat."

"It's a big company so there is a lot of red tape. Also, the company tends to promote people who do not have any experience. The company looks for natural talent and leadership ability more so than technical expertise."

"Look for more technical expertise in the people that you promote to upper management positions, not just leadership ability."

"It's a great place to work. But only if have grown in the company. People are not very open to the idea of new people."

"Nationwide is a great company to work for. I have worked there for 4 years and 8 months. Nationwide is always looking for ways to improve and constantly changes. It is great being your own boss and establishing outside referral sources. I recommend anyone who likes to politic to work for the insurance Industry."

They have a very friendly environment and they are very customer focused, so our transition to the support team should be very detailed so that they can do a better job to support the customers. Their SDLC cycle is sometimes too slow for my taste, but this is needed to limit the risk that is often very substantial as its monetary and PR value. For this reason, the code undergoes exhaustive review and you get detailed specs and requirements."
