Overview McMaster University is a public university with its campus in Hamilton, Canada. The university was founded in 1887 and is named after William McMaster, a Canadian Senator who gave $900,000 to found the university. McMaster was under the control of the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec until 1957, when the university became a publicly funded and non-denominational educational institution.

The university is known to have a unique approach to learning called the “McMaster Model”, which is an interdisciplinary, problem based and student center approach. McMaster was the first university to introduce problem-based learning (PBL) in 1960. This method has now spread to the majority of medical schools in Canada and over 80% of medical schools in the United States. Many other schools around the world have also adopted it.
