What do you like about working at McAlister's Deli?

"The atmosphere and idea was great. It is an outstanding concept that caters to the masses who want good, quickly served food at a reasonable price in a warm and friendly atmosphere."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"This is not a bad job, but you must realize the restaurant work is not a career but, rather a lifestyle. Make sure you ask questions on everything. As with any job, no one will give you answers to things you don't question. Be prepared to work long hours, deal with young people and a relatively new corporate staff."

What don't you like about working at McAlister's Deli?

"Lack of support from corporate HQ was horrible at best. They were suffering a severe identity crisis and constantly changing menu items and regulations to better the environment and increase sales, but never had an adequate training team to induct these things. The training process for new managers was insufficient on the administrative side of things and the people who were there to help you were not nearly as knowledgeable as they should have been, mainly due to the extremely high rate of turnover. The operations of the actual facilities are difficult due to the chaotic flow of kitchen and unnecessary steps needed to complete most tasks. Things need to be finely honed and made to flow with ease and less confusion."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"There needs to be a rock solid team designated solely for training management and crew. With descriptive training materials and a more rigorous training schedule. More follow-up, more accountability, better hiring practices and more knowledgeable corporate staff. There should be a more detailed break down of departments on the corporate level so each department can better monitor, control and resolve problems."
