"The independence. I also learned the value of referrals and how to get them, which is a very valuable trait in sales."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you did not go to private schools and if you do not have friends who are professionals (doctors, lawyers, etc.), and if you did not grow up in a family business, then you have too many strikes against you to delve into a sales career in life insurance."

What don't you like about working at MassMutual Financial Group?

"It's a sink or swim business. The company provides no base income support. After the first year it's straight commission."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"You need to get new recruits out selling quicker. Sales skills need to be developed immediately. A straight base income in the first year would attract more candidates, rather than the current depreciated income structure."
