Lehman Brothers Careers & Info

Former CEO: Richard S. Fluid, Jr.

Status: Filed for bankruptcy in 2008

The Lehman Brothers Holdings were founded in 1850 by three brothers: Henry, Emmanuel and Mayer. The company was in the financial services marketing but declared bankruptcy in October 2008. Since then, they have done no business. Before that, they were the fourth largest company for investments in America. The administrators were forced to pay £148 million into the pension plans, which had been underfunded, in October 2011. They administrators appealed, but this was lost.

The company started out as H. Lehman when Henry moved from Bavaria and settled in Alabama. Soon after, Emmanuel arrived, and then Mayer arrived in 1850. H. Lehman changed name to H. Lehman and Bro. and then to the Lehman Brothers. It was originally a dry goods store, but Henry died in 1855 from yellow fever and the remaining brothers decided to take the company in a direction that they would never regret.

Up until 1969, the company was passed down through generations. This ended with Robert Lehman. By the early 70s, the company started to struggle and the CEO of Bell & Howell, Pete Peterson came in to save the company. By 1984, a merger with American Express happened.

There is some ongoing litigation into the company after there were possibilities that there were financial malpractices before the firm declared bankruptcy in 2008. However, in a report in March 2011, there is no evidence of these malpractices.

The Lehman Brothers culture was extremely diverse before the declaration of bankruptcy. The company had offices and branches all over the world and employees from many different beliefs and backgrounds. The practices in the company were to accept and respect these differences, which meant that those working at Lehman Brothers were able to grow, both professionally and personally.

There are many different Lehman Brothers careers available, from administrative assistants to account executives. Each of these had Lehman Brothers benefits, which differed depending on the location around the world. Many benefits include healthcare and a pension plan. The salary was another benefit to the job, with the average salary being $88,000 per annum. The maximum a person was on was a vice president, who earned $225,000 per year. The lowest was the analysts, who earned $30,000 per annum.

There have been many employees that said good things about the company before it went bankrupt. They enjoyed working there and learned a lot during their time with the company – no matter how short that was.
