Working at Kumon in Teaneck, NJ: 5 Employee Reviews

Kumon Employee

"The company is declining. The former President was fired and the new President is my former manager and a micro-manager. This place sucks. The CFO makes staff post fake positive reviews on company review websites."

"Kumon North America Inc is an unethical company to work for."

What do you like about working at Kumon?

"Nothing. This is not the place anyone should work at."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't ever join this bad company. HR VP/CFO makes employees post fake positive reviews on Glassdoor and praises the Japanese president. Same president was fired. Our GM told us that the president pocketed millions dollars of advertising funds of franchisees."

What don't you like about working at Kumon?

"I have worked at for 6 years. This is my overall analysis: 1) Bad upper management and Japanese 2) Employees are treated as a laborers 3) Boot lickers are rewarded. CFO calls it a skill 4) No place for honesty 5) No career growth plan 6) Cost cutting only for the little people 7) No emphasis on leadership creation 8) Below average training 9) Highly unethical 10) Not a good company for high achievers. Each year millions are wasted on franchisee conferences and staff conferences."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Resign, resign, resign, resign, resign, resign, resign, resign, resign...or fire yourselves. Do you get it"

"Bad company to work for. Think twice before joining. HR is bait and switch."

What do you like about working at Kumon?

"Overall the company has a laid back work environment with 5 people doing 1 person's job."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't waste your time on a company like this. Kumon has a backward culture. Staff are afraid to speak up because they fear being fired."

What don't you like about working at Kumon?

"The upper management sucks. Recently the Japanese upper management including President, Vice President and COO, as well as several other Japanese in the company in the U.S. were let go by our parent company in Japan. The rumor is that they were involved in a misappropriation scam. Past few years have been bad to work under the Japanese. The other upper management should have also been let go by the company. Everyone thinks they were involved in the scandal too. It has been difficult working here. Almost every week we have had a reorganization for the past couple of years. No one knows what they are going to get into when they walk into the office in the morning. Today you might have been doing one job, tomorrow you are suddenly put to do something entirely different even though you have no qualifications or experience. Then you are blamed for having failed. Training is poor. I don't know any company that has so many training programs and travel involved only to realize that the training was a complete waste of time. Working with the franchisees is a equally bad. They are arrogant and repulsive. The company hates the franchisees and the franchisees hate the company staff. The management turns a blind eye to what the franchisees because they are scared of the franchisees and want to keep their positions. I would never enroll my own children in the Kumon program, if I had any. The program sucks and the franchisees and company trainers do not know what they are doing."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"All the upper management must resign from the company. All Human Resources staff must resign for the constant reorganizations. You go to HR to file a complaint and next thing you know is that you are put on a performance plan soon to be fired. HR stop posting fake reviews on Glassdoor or asking staff to do so. The last time the CFO asked us to post rave reviews about the company on Glassdoor and rate the President really high. The same President now has been let go. That is a shame and goes to show how far some of the brown-nosers in the upper management go to keep their positions."

What don't you like about working at Kumon?

"The Top Management sucks. It is typical Japanese mentality. The top management is unethical and irresponsible, and communication is very bad."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"The Japanese management in Teaneck were shown the door last week by the parent company in Japan. Everyone hopes that they will do the same to all the other non-Japanese top management who were cohorts of the Japanese."

"Bad. This is the worst company I have worked for. Everyone hates the company."

What do you like about working at Kumon?

"Easy commute to work from home. They reimburse mileage for work."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't ever join this company, even if you are starving."

What don't you like about working at Kumon?

"The management is disingenuous. It's like working in a prison. Management is constantly spying on staff. If you speak up, you are fired. Japanese hold mist of the positions. President, EVP, COO, are all Japanese too. Non-Japanese management are just stooges. CFO/Head of HR being the ring leader of the stooges. CFO begs staff to post fake reviews on Glassdoor. Most Glassdoor positive reviews are FAKE. Constant reorganizations take place here. Management hates the franchisees and vice versa. Franchisees abuse staff and management doesn't have your back. President meets with franchisees and throws staff under the bus. CFO and the HR department keep busy writing up employees whom the notorious EVP and President doesn't like. Most of the senior management has no clue what they are doing and lack any vision. No one knows what's going on most of the time. Millions are spent on entertainment events that are wasteful."
