Fastenal opened its first store in Winona, Minnesota in 1967. Bob Kierlin was the company’s founder, and it went public in 1987. Then, it had 50 stores and generated $30 million in sales. Fastenal now has more than 2,500 stores and generates $1.9 billion in yearly sales. Some of its products include office furniture and supplies, paint, chemicals, and plumbing and welding supplies. The company is committed to improving its green credentials and quality. Fastenal also strives to increase the diversity of its supplier and vendor base by identifying minority and woman business enterprises with which they can build long-term relationships.

Fastenal is one of the fastest-growing full-line industrial distributors. It is the largest fastener distributor in the country. It has an in-house manufacturing division, a quality assurance and engineering department and several distribution centers throughout North America. It operates its own fleet of more than 200 semi-trucks and trailers and has locations in every state and in countries throughout the world, including the Dominican Republic, Malaysia and Hungary.
