"Plan to get in and work with one department for a few years, but don't depend on promotion within that department. Promotion almost always comes by moving to a different department to get a to a higher level."

"Structure is somewhat stifling. In hiring and promotion, level of education is weighted more highly than skills or knowledge."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"Support more creativity, mainly by taking more risks. There is a lot of talent at Duke, but the bureaucracy is a little stifling."
