What do you like about working at County of Orange?

"Great people in the research departments. Opportunity to collaborate between agencies."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you are skilled, find a job outside of county employment. The local news is very anti-government employee. The pension is a joke -- only if you are willing to give up social security, and only if you work there 35 years will it ever make up for the 1/3 of your salary they take out every paycheck. Some departments are little clouds above the remaining doom and gloom of others. A great opportunity to meet good people who got stuck. Parking is considered a perk. Don't work for the sheriff's department unless you want to be treated as a criminal."

What don't you like about working at County of Orange?

"In two different agencies, the cultures were night and day different. Within one, the goal was to communicate well, develop positive goals, and to explore new ways to build on the success of the department. In the other, outdated political ambition seemed to be the only way. Within the agency, backstabbing was the norm, the head of the agency was so paranoid that no discussions were ever held openly, and the employees were treated worse than the prisoners in the nearby jail!"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Create additional opportunities for non IT research professionals to advance in their careers. Many have PhD or MA degrees, yet aren't allowed to progress beyond step 12 of the RA IV position. This leaves the only choice for advancement to leave the county."

What don't you like about working at County of Orange?

"This is where people go to if they only wanted a straight pay and no chance to make a difference."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Please, please... really evaluate what work can be done and the people who do it. There is so much more that can be offered to the community."
