Circuit City Stores, Inc. was an American electronics superstore that originated with a small storefront in 1949. By the 1970s, Circuit City was bursting onto the superstore scene, offering retail name-brand computers, entertainment software, personal electronics and even large appliances. The company went bankrupt in 2009, liquidating its stores after failing to find a buyer.
Circuit City is no longer in business, but its name lives on under the ownership of Systemax. The Circuit City trademark and e-commerce business was purchased by Systemax at an auction in May 2009. Earlier, Systemax acquired Tiger Direct and CompUSA in a similar fashion, building a large Internet presence for retail electronics.
At the time of its bankruptcy and liquidation, Circuit City was second in the nation only to Best Buy in the retail electronics industry. The company owned over 500 stores nationwide, but promptly closed over 150 of them upon filing bankruptcy in November of 2008. The recessions of the late 2000s caused a slump in consumer spending. By March of 2009, Circuit City had closed all of its remaining stores.
In January of 2010, the company began liquidating more assets by placing the company headquarters up for sale. This five-story building and its surrounding acreage were finally purchased in September 2010 for $3 million.
Although the brick and mortar side of Circuit City is gone, the brand name is not forgotten. Circuit City.com offers an even wider selection of electronics than its predecessor. Online shoppers can find HDTVs, DVD players, DVRs, Blue-Ray players, home theater systems, digital cameras, GPS players, digital pictures frames and more. The Internet retailer boasts great deals, easy online shopping, fast shipping and 24-hour customer service.
Circuit City careers are a thing of the past, but jobs connected to Circuit City.com can be found through the parent company, Systemax. Call center operators and technical web-related careers now dominate the Circuit City culture under the Systemax name. Gone are the salespeople and cashiers once working at Circuit City. They have been replaced by electronic shopping carts and Internet product descriptions. The corporate headquarters, its employees and all of the Circuit City benefits have faded away. Circuit City transformed from giant electronics retailer into a lingering brand name almost overnight.
Finance Manager is the highest paying job at Circuit City at $125,000 annually.
