Caterpillar Careers & Info

Current CEO: Jim Umpleby

Status: Active

The big, yellow, earth-moving machines sporting the Caterpillar brand date back to the late 1800s and were originally meant to improve farming methods at the time. Two different farm owners, Benjamin Holt and Daniel Best, were trying to find a way to get more performance out of their steam tractors. Their efforts resulted in the creation of a tractor that had planks surrounding the wheels. The farmers needed a way to prevent heavy machinery from getting stuck in the soil, and through experimentation, found that this idea worked. One possible source for the Caterpillar (CAT) name came from a photographer who noticed that the movement of the machine was similar to the insect of the same name.

Holt decided to use this idea to create a fleet of tractors for others, and Caterpillar was born. Thanks to these initial efforts, over 200,000 people have now embraced CAT careers, which span the globe. Each member of the workforce attempts to inspire change and help integrate the equipment the company produces in ways that improve modern society. Working at CAT means embracing values that drives the spirit of the company and the customers that move the soil and create new possibilities in the world.

A strong focus on progress means that Caterpillar needs strong leaders. The Caterpillar culture embraces a diverse approach toward bringing about change within the world. The company seeks dynamic individuals that understand how to best implement these ideas into actual usable processes. Joining this innovative company will present opportunities that most people never dreamed of for their career. The ability to facilitate improvements around the world in a sustainable manner provides a level of job satisfaction that can be difficult to find in modern careers.

In addition to a competitive compensation package, employees are offered a comprehensive Caterpillar benefits package that promotes development of their career and their personal well-being. These incentives are meant to inspire, motivate and reward the efforts that the workforce exhibit on a daily basis. The uniquely designed healthy balance program provides the tools that each person needs to achieve wellness in their lives. Combined with the work life solutions initiative, an employee realizes they are more than just a worker at the company. Instead, each individual becomes an important part of the Caterpillar family while being able to care for their own family. Paving the way for the future is part of Caterpillar's values.
