"I enjoyed being a cashier because I had the opportunity to meet people from my neighborhood and expand upon my communication skills via small talk and recommending weekly sales. Though I would like to expand on said skills through some sort of sales position"

Cashier at Plum Market
in Chicago, IL

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"The worst company I have ever worked for. I have never been more unhappy."

What do you like about working at Plum Market?

"Nothing at all. Worst company I've ever worked for. I cannot find one thing that was positive."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Do not take this job if you can avoid it. This job is only good if you want to make a very small amount of money."

What don't you like about working at Plum Market?

"This is the worst company I've ever worked at. They lie and tell you that the minimum hours you can get is 32 and then once your hired they cut your hours dramatically. The customers are rude and disrespectful and so is the store leadership. You work constantly in fear of your job and there is a very negative energy in the store. People get fired constantly without notice. This was the worse job I've ever had."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I have no suggestion just a warning for anyone considering working there."

"When they offer you their initial pay rate offer, don't accept it. I did and now I realize I am the lowest paid cashier in this company."

What don't you like about working at Lowe's?

"The cashiers are the disposable pawns of retail. Not a lot of respect is given and it takes time and luck to get anywhere."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Maybe management should try respecting their crew a little more and helping out every once in a while, instead of being crazed power hogs that act like they don't have time for petty requests such as helping a customer with board cutting."

"Worst experience of my life."

What do you like about working at Pathmark Stores?

"Time and a half on Sundays. Holiday pay. My coworkers."

"Dont bother interviewing. The compant only hires young high schoolers who only stay for a month."

What don't you like about working at Pathmark Stores?

"Completely terrible company. Management gives no shits about the employees. Cutting hours left and right. The customers are mad that nothing is on the selves. I just give them Jerseys number so they can complain to then. The owner/ his little buddies that come in once a year and the selves are actually packed out seems like a complete moron. Jersey needs to run there stores better. No room for advancement/ nonpay raises"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Let someone else run a business if you guys can't."

Cashier at BJ's Wholesale
in Langhorne, PA

What do you like about working at BJ's Wholesale?

"Most of the front line employees are fun to work with and you can make many new friends. They are also very flexible with your scheduling."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Know that you are getting into retail and often have to deal with rude and obnoxious customers."

What don't you like about working at BJ's Wholesale?

"The management is horrible, they are never helpful when you need a work related problem fixed. They are extremely skimpy on payroll and often hire new and cut back more experienced employee's hours. Also all the employees, including managers, all gossip about each other. It's like you are in high school again."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Focus more on the actually needs of their employees instead of doing whatever it takes to meet their monthly goals. Employees will work better if they are happy and treated with respect."

"I hate Lowe's management policies. I hate all big box retailers."

What do you like about working at Lowe's?

"Do not interview with Lowe's - biggest waste of your life. Go to Fortune 500 best places to work."

What don't you like about working at Lowe's?

"Lowe's is a terrible company to work for--almost as bad as Walmart."

What suggestions do you have for management?

Cashier at Walmart

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Walmart's goal is to make money, and they will run you over in their quest."

What do you like about working at Walmart?

"Friendly associates, good job to work at as a teenager with a first job, free food if it was mislabelled or is expiring in a day or two."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"I would tell you to only apply if you have strong independence but also follow rules very carefully, because they will leave you alone to do your work and then pop up out of nowhere if you try to take a shortcut."

What don't you like about working at Walmart?

"The training for being a cashier is minimal, never have the opportunity to talk to managers, only one person can change your schedule if you ask to switch shifts with someone, the Walmart rewards mastercard has a poor takeup and you begin to hate asking because everyone says no, but if you don't you know you'll be fired (they won't 'fire' you, they'll just reduce hours until you have to quit, find a different reason to fire you or move you to a terrible department.)"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Maybe come out of your office and act like an associate sometimes. We're you ever in the position I'm in Try it and see how you like it, walk a mile in my shoes before you judge me."

Cashier at Harris Teeter
in Wake Forest, NC

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Hard work, low pay, out of this world expectations of employees."

What do you like about working at Harris Teeter?

"Working with some nice people (not in management) and set hours every week as an overnight cashier."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Get used to working hard at a pay rate $0.50 above minimum wage with no chance of a raise. Don't expect to be able to work more than 28 hours a week, more like an average of 15. Expect that management will have out of this world expectations and will put it out on you when not met. And if going for overnight shifts don't plan on a chance to advance."

What don't you like about working at Harris Teeter?

"Lots of hard work always standing on your feet. The front end is not really engineered for tall people, always have to bend over to be able to use the registers causing back pain. The low pay compared with other companies with like jobs. The company has a goes out of its way to treat the customer right, but does not treat employees well."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"To increase wages of employees for the amount of work done.Don't expect the impossible from people every night (i.e. be short on people one night, have a large truck and still expect everything to be done in the morning). Oh, and don't over hire so much where you can only give employees 4 hrs a week."

Cashier at Home Depot
in Louisville, CO

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"It was okay. I learned how to cashier."

What do you like about working at Home Depot?

"There was lots of down time. If you worked in the garden center you got to listen to the radio, set to your own station (though this wasn't authorized). Tattoos, piercings, and unnatural hair colors were allowed."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Just say yes to everything, then slowly work with your direct manager to get what you really want."

What don't you like about working at Home Depot?

"There was no flexibility with scheduling, even for part-time employees. You literally had to be available all the time, so you couldn't take a second job and say, I can't work these times."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Be more flexible with your part-timers. Know your people. If it's really busy, hop on a cash machine, water, get carts - help out!"

Cashier at Stop & Shop
in Cranston, RI

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Favoritism and lack of growth opportunities ruined my experience here."

What do you like about working at Stop & Shop?

"Overall most job duties are relatively easy. Also like that we are backed by the workers union. I dont mind dealing with customers and such as I have done that from an early age."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"The interview process isn't hard at all. They look for very flexible hrs and someone who can perform the job needed."

What don't you like about working at Stop & Shop?

"There's really not much opportunity for growth. There is a big emphasis, at-least in my location, on favoritism. This affects your scheduling, at work experience, rules set for individuals etc etc...The company also seems very backwards thinking in which they prefer making a profit than improving employee's experience which in turn affects and ruins the whole employee to customer experience.for example...as a cashier I cannot show a customer where something is I would have to find someone who is usually not around.things that require a supervisor key some are ridiculous and hold up lines and etc making the checkout process tedious at times specially when they are people in line waiting.I will add that I also was receiving for about a year and even though all the department heads loved me and committed not one mistake...as soon as we got a new supervising manager in my dept because he felt I didn't like him my hours were dropped with no warning and not only that, I was also removed of my duties and moved to cashier from one day to the next. worse yet, they had a meeting without me to come to that decision.Coming in I was also promised a way to ease into full time and get the specific training. When I said I lacked transportation they all but shunned me and said there was no way to go full time if I wasn't willing to travel. Which in my financial state is nearly impossible. I was hoping I could get a full-time position and save up for a car to then be able to travel and even that suggestion was shut down. I'm basically left stuck in my current position of low pay and ever changing scheduling with no chance to move up."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"management should focus on actually doing their jobs. Many times have I've seen other employees break rules but not get penalized for it.This becomes very annoying and discouraging specially when favoritism is involved. You will often see others move up to positions with better hours or pay without putting in the work, beyond frustrating. also the employee-manager relationship isnt good ...atleast in my location they will smile at certain people and scold specific ones regardless of their performance. I dont get the feeling they care or want to know if we have any ideas or anything to offer to the company except doing what they tell us to."

Cashier at Hannaford
in Bangor, ME

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"It was fine, until I actually started needing hours."

What do you like about working at Hannaford?

"If you are a student, or only looking to work here for a limited time, then Hannaford is a good job. They'll work with whatever your schedule is, though your hours aren't guaranteed."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't apply here unless you are either in school or only intend to work for a limited time."

What don't you like about working at Hannaford?

"Over penalization towards break infractions (a rough total of 12 minutes of live infractions can get you terminated), with each infraction lasting on your record for a year and a half. Very few full time positions, and the scheduling system (KRONOS) will make no effort to schedule you to full availability. People who work two jobs usually find themselves with single-digit hours at Hannaford. There are no employee benefits (not even a store discount), and even paid holidays for full timers are at risk. It seems genuinely geared to keep serious employees at bay."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Dial back on the lifespan of infractions, or give dedicated employees methods to work them off. Some people refuse to cover shifts in fear of the possibility of a write up. Employee recognition is non-existant. The Thanks a bunch cards are given extremely rarely, and even then they seem like an insult, as they only qualify you for a raffle. You don't have to make us like the job, but you could at least make it tolerable. It seems every benefit given to the customers is taken at cost to the employees."

Cashier at Old Time Pottery
in Wilmington, NC

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"The worst job I have ever had. I have had better experiences in fast food."

What do you like about working at Old Time Pottery?

"The fact that I get paid higher than minimum wage!"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Look at other reviews online. It's amazing how people in different states have the same complaints about this company. So, many people who need jobs end up quitting. Try to find other employment if you can."

What don't you like about working at Old Time Pottery?

"-Management-No benefits-You're expected to do everything-Few hours are given-Not paid extra for clocking in a few minutes early -Written up for leaving early, even if its an emergency-You can't be friendly to your co-workers; if you walk in and ask them how their doing, management gets upset and swears you're not working hard enough"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"If you employees are working hard and doing their jobs, there is no reason to have an attitude with them. You can be positive and still let your employees know that you expect them to do their jobs. Meetings need to be had at least once a month. There is a lot of communication problems within the store. One manager says do it this way and another comes along and changes it. It wouldn't hurt to thank employees for their hard work or asking them to do things nicely."
