Cadence Design Systems Careers & Info

Current CEO: Anirudh Devgan

Status: Active

Cadence Design Systems engineers the software used in designing semiconductor chips and printed circuit boards. These components are then used by other companies to develop computer systems and peripherals, telecommunications and networking equipment, wireless products, automotive electronics, and many other electronic products.

Cadence was created in 1988 when computer-aided design (CAD) companies ECAD and SDA Systems merged. ECAD dominated the fledgling electronic design automation (EDA) industry, because unlike its competitors, the company made its software available for use on a wide variety of computer platforms. SDA’s strength was its innovative design framework architecture that allowed software tools from different vendors to be linked into a common interface.

By expanding on ECAD’s portability strategy, the newly formed Cadence Design Systems quickly gained market share, becoming the world’s largest designer of chip software. The EDA market, however, promised to be much larger. In the early 1990s Cadence began acquiring companies with complementary technologies in order to position itself as an EDA leader.

The strategy worked. By 1992, Cadence had become the world’s largest EDA supplier. Today, the company, headquartered in San Jose, generates $936 million annually and employs 4,400 workers. The company maintains operations in North America, Europe, Japan and the Asia Pacific region. Lip-Bu Tan, the President and Chief Operating Officer, has a background both in semiconductor technology and venture capital finance.

Like many mature technology companies these days, operations are just as important as technology innovations at Cadence. Long-term Cadence Design careers are just as likely to be in the legal and marketing departments as they are in the engineering divisions. Engineering staff frequently complains that working at Cadence Design Systems subordinates their technological skills to the demands of the marketing division. However, Cadence continues to invest more heavily than most Silicon Valley companies in the research and development of new technologies.

In response to rapid changes within the EDA industry over the last decade, Cadence has restructured its organization many times. Each reorganization has been accompanied by significant reductions in its workforce.

Cadence describes Cadence culture as one that “empowers employees to be an integral part of a unified team.” Many tech employees have a more skeptical view of the company’s internal culture, noting that management doesn’t have the level of technological knowledge to promote effective technological innovation.

Cadence benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance; health and dependent care flexible spending accounts; domestic partner coverage; tuition reimbursement; both a 401 K match and a stock purchase plan; and retiree health access.
