Blockbuster LLC is primarily a home video rental service, which grew from merely video rental stores to online streaming databases and in-mail rentals. Founded in 1985, it is headquartered in McKinney, Texas. Blockbuster was initially very successful because of their efforts to cater each of the local Blockbusters to the community in which it is located. In other words, Blockbuster leaders stocked video rentals based on the demographics of the population in the neighborhood. However, since 2009, Blockbuster gradually took a major hit as a result of high competition from other video rental competitors, especially Netflix. In 2010, Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy and was shortly thereafter auctioned off and acquitted by Dish Network. Although in its heyday Blockbuster had about 5,000 stores and 60,000 employees; right now, Dish Network currently operates 500 stores altogether.
