Black & Decker Careers & Info

Current CEO: James Loree Status: Active

The story of Black and Decker began in 1910. The enterprise started as a small-town machine shop within the city of Baltimore. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker were responsible for patenting the first portable electric drill with unique grip features and a trigger that had not been seen before in the marketplace. In 1936, the company went public, and their common stocks could be traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Although the original name has remained embedded in the minds of most consumers, a recent change in the company name occurred in the year 2010. A merger with Stanley Works created the company, Stanley Black & Decker, and Black & Decker is now a subsidiary of that company.

In recent decades, the industry for small appliances and household tools has grown proportionately with the housing market. During the housing boom era, every company that supplied products for consumer and commercial use was affected by the growing market demands. The need for power tools and home improvement supplies seemed to be as stable as real estate itself. Although recent changes in overall market conditions have caused some losses, the product line is still resilient. It supports various commercial and industrial applications. As such, prospective job seekers continue to find opportunities for working at Black & Decker Corporation.

In general, the product line is divided into categories such as lawn and garden, cleaning tools, home and office, auto repair, lighting, protective wear and many others. The company’s products represent many different aspects of home improvement, repair and commercial tools. Because of the variety, there are many opportunities for seasoned electricians as well as do-it-yourself hobbyists to enjoy rewarding Black and Decker careers.

In addition to established product lines, there is a continuous flow of information between the retail outlets and the manufacturers to determine which new products are most likely to succeed in today’s economy. The enhanced fuel efficiency of the newer power tools and lawn mowers has received acclaim from customers who are always looking for ways to save on both gasoline and maintenance.

Sales associates who bring product and industry knowledge with them to their job interview can expect a warm reception. The Black & Decker culture is rewarding to employees who demonstrate a passion for their work. Some Black & Decker benefits are offered to seasoned employees, but many new hires find that these are not compelling enough to warrant commitment.
