Barclays Capital helps investors globally with investments, financing and risk management services. The company also deals U.S. Treasury securities and European Government bonds. The British-based bank, in 2008, managed £1.2 trillion in assets. The company also has offices in over 28 different countries and employs over 20,000 people. The company is currently working to improve its presence in North America.

The company was founded 1997. Barclay and Company has acquired numerous banks and have operated under a number of different names including the Quaker Bank. In the early days, the bank had 182 branches primarily in the east and south east of England. At that time, the total number of deposits equaled £26 million. The bank had acquired 1,837 branches by 1926.

The bank became global in 1925 after the merger of Colonial Bank, National Bank of South Africa and the Anglo Egyptian Bank. In the early 1980s, Barclays became the first foreign bank to file with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. They were able to raise long term capital on the New York market. The bank was also the first British bank to have shares listed on Tokyo and New York stock exchanges.

In 1995, Barclays acquired Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors. Another acquisition of Spain’s Banco Zaragozano was completed in 2003. In 2005, the bank acquired South Africa’s Absa Group, which was the largest retail bank with over seven million customers. Lehman Brothers’ North America was acquired by Barclays Capital in 2008. This acquisition propelled the company forward as a leader in equities, commodities trading, fixed income, credit, foreign exchange and mergers and acquisitions.
