4Honestly, absolutely none. For the first time in my adult life, I can honestly say I am working with and under the finest men and women I've ever met. Our command team is incredibly efficient and genuinely cares about their soldiers/employees, our middle management supervises JUST enough to be helpful without being overbearing, and our junior supervisors work WITH their teams to implement new ideas instead of providing the ideas then simply watching their minions work.
5The National Guard is not for everyone. Days are long and deployments are longer. But if you go into with both eyes open it can be a life changer. Here are some tips!
• Study to get the highest Arms Vocational Aptitude score as possible. High scores open doors to better jobs
• Pass all your PT test and maintain fitness or you will not get promoted
• Take advantage of all educational benefits! This is one of the Military's best kept secret. (Note) Private Schools may exceed benefits limits so do your homework and ask questions
• Remember, after E4 you have to earn your promotions. Your buddies may end up being you biggest competition!
• And finally, manage your pay well by saving it. There is no reason you should not have a few bucks stashed away after four years of service. More if you go for 20 years
5I've been a member of the Army National Guard for over five years. Since beginning this journey, it has been a life changing experience. I was skeptical at first and wasn't sure if it was possible for me to actually be able to complete this mission I had set for myself. After all that I've overcome, I wouldn't change my decision for anything in the world. If the choice to do it all over again was available, you can surely bet that I would tackle it and go in head on with no regrets.
