Alcatel-Lucent USA, Inc. is the American division of Alcatel-Lucent, a global telecommunications giant created in 2006 when the French telecommunications provider Alcatel SA merged with Lucent Technologies. Lucent Technologies had formerly been AT&T’s Western Electric Manufacturing Division before AT&T spun the division off in 1996 so that it could sell products to competitors without violating antimonopoly regulations.
By the time Lucent was bought by Alcatel, the spinoff of its microelectronics and business systems divisions as well as massive rounds of layoffs had weakened the company considerably: Lucent was less than 20 percent the size it had been just a decade before. Industry analysts had expressed reservations over whether Lucent would be able to survive on its own.
Building on a venerable research and development tradition that was started in 1925 by Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent focuses on designing, developing and building network communication solutions including equipment, hardware and software. As such, the company is fiercely protective of its extensive library of over 31,000 patents. Alcatel Lucent culture values intelligent innovation above all else. Bell Labs, which is now a division of Alcatel Lucent, had a hand in some of the most influential technological developments of the modern age including the transistor, the laser, the UNIX operating system and the C and C++ programming languages. Alcatel Lucent continues this tradition of innovative engineering by hiring professionals who are the very best at what they do and offering them opportunities to develop other skills in addition to their core competencies through participation in Alcatel Lucent USA’s own training centers, part of the company’s Alcatel-Lucent University network. Engineering is just one of dozens of exciting Alcatel-Lucent careers.
The company is headquartered in Murray Hill, New Jersey; its President is Robert Vrij who reports to Alcatel-Lucent’s Paris-based chairman and chief executive officer, Ben Verwaayen. Alcatel-Lucent accounts for close to one-third of its parent company’s revenues. In 2010, the parent company Alcatel-Lucent paid $167 million in fines to the U.S. government to settle charges brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which had accused the company of violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
An Alcatel-Lucent career will enable you to travel to many places around the world: Its parent company maintains offices in over 130 different countries. Working at Alcatel-Lucent also encourages employees to collaborate with colleagues outside the boundaries of their own department or division. Horizontal mobility is the norm, not the exception.
Alcatel-Lucent benefits include health, dental and life group insurance, vacation and sick leave, 401 K, and whole or partial reimbursement for tuition and childcare. As a telecommunications company, Alcatel-Lucent supports its employees in telecommuting and frequently allows them flexible working hours.
VP of Sales is the highest paying job at Alcatel-Lucent at $205,000 annually.
