Working at 3M in Maplewood, MN: 13 Employee Reviews

Project Engineer

"Great people, good place to work but the layoffs got me."

What do you like about working at 3M?

"The ability to be your own boss and own your own projects."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Be yourself."

What don't you like about working at 3M?

"They laid me off, and compensation is somewhat low."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Use performance reviews for lay offs."

Sourcing Analyst

"It's a good, solid workplace, but you've got to watch your back."

What do you like about working at 3M?

"There were a lot of career opportunities in different areas and a lot of resources not present in smaller companies."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"You have two choices for success: Quickly learn who the right people are and become their friends, or keep your head down, do your work well, and hope for the best. The atmosphere might be a lot different at the plant level than I saw at corporate HQ, so keep that in mind."

What don't you like about working at 3M?

"Nepotism and office politics. Favoritism. It's a large enough company that it has its own family and all the social issues that come with that."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Hire a larger percentage of upper management from outside the company. Institute better / more thorough job training. Support certification and licensing in industry-recognized institutions like ISM. Getting such licensing or certification will tie into job training. Support outside education (and actually support it - I was told for years that there might be funding available for education, but it never was)."

"It's been like a roller coaster ride - some very high and some very low points."

What do you like about working at 3M?

"I like the benefits, they are above average. The pay is great - very close to market average."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"My only advice would be to just give it a try - every business within 3M will give you a different experience."

What don't you like about working at 3M?

"There is no flexibility with work environment. 3M is very behind the times as far as collaboration and allowing for work from home situations. They are also a little behind on technology so it really inhibits growth for someone who wants to learn new things and actually be able to implement them."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Flexibility and more open communication would be great things to work towards achieving. By communication I don't mean meeting to tell us about the finances and what everyone else in 3M is doing. Clue us in on what's happening in our own departments so we don't have to find out about it from an email announcement at the same time the rest of the 3M world finds out about it."

"There is not much room for growth and no emphasis put on innovation or improvement. The business is stuck on old technologies and methodologies. I don't believe it is a very diverse company or that the company cares for its employees, as there is little opportunity with IT in the US - the work has been outsourced."

Lab Technical Aide

"I've worked as a lab tech aide at 3M for over 3 years now, and as expected it has proven itself to be a strong company that highly values its employees. The company is very large and the community is strong with most everyone I worked with being happy they were employed at 3M. The lab I work in isn't very aesthetically appealing but the equipment we can get is very good. The pay is not very competitive for the position I am in, but the hours are extremely flexible, and they can work around nearly any schedule. A fantastic job to have while in school."
