Worcester is part of a relatively small group of polytechnic universities, which are institutions of higher learning that place a strong focus on mathematics, technology, engineering and science. WPI was founded 1865 by John Boyton and Ichabod Washburn. The school would blend theory that was taught in classes with practical experience that could be done in the shops.
