Webmasters are responsible for creating and maintaining web sites for individual customers or companies on the internet. On a typical day, a webmaster will communicate with clients while they monitor, improve, and update existing web sites.


Skillset: Webmasters typically have a strong background in web design and programming as well as database administration. They must be able to work as a team, multitask, have excellent troubleshooting abilities, and critical thinking skills. Strong communication is also required as they will be in constant communication with clients.


Education: Most webmasters have a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Certain certifications and training may be acceptable depending on a company’s needs. Some employers will allow a potential webmaster to demonstrate their abilities through tests without the need of a degree.


Career Path: The foundation of a career as a webmaster is a strong grasp of web design, programming, and having a thorough understanding of the internet. Pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science or information technology and consider getting a master’s degree to up desirability. Internships and personal and freelance projects are a great way to gain experience and build a resume.
