A VP of sales and marketing is an executive within a company. This person will be in charge of the actions of all of the sales and marketing staff. The VP will be tasked with coming up with good ideas. His success will be defined by how he is able to enhance the company's presence in a given market.
Skillset: Like most management positions, this one requires a person to have strong people skills. A good VP will have the ability to motivate the people under him. This particular VP position also requires a firm handle on creative advertising and analytics. It is a varied position that can be different depending upon the size of the company.
Education: Many of the people who become vice presidents will have an undergraduate degree in marketing, sales or advertising. Though this is not absolutely necessary, an MBA will almost always be a requirement for a person who wants to head this far up the ladder.
Career Path: Getting a VP job requires one to put in years of work at a company. It requires a person to start off with the right education and to land an entry-level job within marketing. Good performance and strong career politics from there can lead to this position.
