Working at Voice of America in Washington, DC: 19 Employee Reviews

Voice of America Employee

"I've worked for Voice of America for 15 years (on and off, mostly on). I actually took time off in between to stay home with my child (making a documentary about it). The company has taught me a lot and I enjoy everyone I work with."

Television Production Manager

"I worked at Voice of America for a year and a half. It is a good organization hauling many features of past News Production into the modern age. The Technical Staff are excellent at their jobs and perform at high standards. The broadcast control room is live and active with a good team collaboration among co-workers within the production side. I can learn a lot about broadcast production within the facility and encompass many roles while working on the technical side of production including technical directing, audio engineering, robotic camera operation, and floor directing. Overall good place with issues from mismanagement. No room to move up."

"Throughout my time at the Voice of America, I’ve been able to expand and improve visual storytelling. Visuals and video production standards have rurally increased and I’m proud to have been a part of this change. "VOA has been essential in my growth as a producer. They have taught be how to manage my time, how to work under pressure, how to work as a team, how to improve my Spanish, and how to really push myself. They showed me what I had in me, and for that I am grateful."

"Decent co-workers. Poor workplace environment (old building with many old building issues). Convenient to METRO. Not a lot of room for advancement, but still a decent place to work, overall."

"Voice of America has a mission with a meaningful purpose. I have personally known people who have learned English listening to VOA and I have read many testimonies of people who have relied on VOA for their news and information outside their own countries. I have also had the good fortune of meeting and befriending many people during my years there. As an agency, VOA has gone through multiple transitions and will continue to do so as the media landscape continues to change and grow."

"While I absolutely love the job I do as a Line Producer, the work environment is extremely toxic. Unfortunately, managers do a very poor job in managing the day-to-day operations. My supervisor knows very little about television production or television news. In fact his skills as a manager leave a lot to be desired as well. He has created an environment where he uses gossip as a tool to divide his staff, attempting to pin employees against one another to hide his lack of skills."
