The United States Geological Survey or USGS is a scientific agency currently funded by the United States government. The agency is part of the United States Department of Interior. By an act of Congress, the USGS was founded on March 3, 1879. The agency’s responsibility was to classify public lands, examine the geological structure, mineral resources, and the products of national domain. These tasks were largely due to the acquisition of large masses of land associated with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 and the Mexican-American War. Clarence King was the first director of the USGS.
The USGS headquarters is located in Reston, Virginia. Currently, the agency studies four scientific disciplines. These disciplines are geology, geography, biology, and hydrology. The agency is a research organization responsible for finding facts in these very disciplines.
Currently, the USGS employs 8,670 employees. Many of these employees are paid in salaries based on their position and pay grade. Employees will enjoy government benefits which include health care, retirement, long-term care and disability, paid holiday and sick leave among other benefits.
