Overview The University of Toledo (commonly referred to as UT) is a public university based in Toledo, Ohio. There are currently 23,085 students attending the institution, of which 18,130 are undergraduates and 4,455 are postgraduate students.

UT began in 1872 as a private trade school that specialized in subjects related to art, such as architectural drawing and painting. In 1884, the university had financial problems and became the property of the city of Toledo. It was renamed the Toledo Manual Training School, which provided instruction in both regular academic subjects and manual training. During World War II, the university had a contract with the military where war training classes were provided at the institution. These classes included military engineering, pilot training, nursing and management.
