University of Rhode Island Overview The University of Rhode Island is a nationally respected public university. The main campus is located in Kingston, Rhode Island. Normally referred to as URI, the university was established in 1888. Its original purpose was to serve as the state's agricultural training school. Today, the university enrolls approximately 20,000 students. There are more than 80 majors in seven different colleges.
