University of Rhode Island Overview The University of Rhode Island is a nationally respected public university. The main campus is located in Kingston, Rhode Island. Normally referred to as URI, the university was established in 1888. Its original purpose was to serve as the state's agricultural training school. Since then, URI has grown into a land, sea and urban grant university.

Today, the university enrolls approximately 20,000 students. There are more than 80 majors in seven different colleges. Known as IEP, the International Engineering Program allows students to earn a dual degree in engineering and a foreign language. This program also permits students to study abroad for one year. IEP has a 100 percent job placement rate after graduation. Other nationally recognized curricula at URI include oceanography, landscape architecture and pharmacy.

In this program, all state employees are entitled to receive preventative medical checkups. URI personnel will receive $50 for getting a vision screening and $100 for a blood pressure screening.
