The University of Louisville (U of L) is a public university located in Louisville, Kentucky. The institution was founded in 1798. It was the first public university owned by a city in the United States. The school was initially known as the Jefferson Seminary. It grew in 1846 when the Louisville Collegiate Institution, the Louisville Medical Institute and the Louisville Law School were combined into one institution of higher learning. The university went on to join the state university system in 1970.
