Overview The University of Dayton (UD) is the largest private university in the state of Ohio. A Roman Catholic institution, the school offers more than 70 undergraduate academic programs and more than 50 master’s degree programs. Headquartered in Dayton, Ohio, UD is operated by the Society of Mary religious order. The university’s roots date back to 1850, when St. Mary’s School for Boys opened on a plot of land in Dayton once known as Dewberry Farm. The school became the University of Dayton in 1920. It was America’s first co-educational Catholic university, opening its doors to women in 1935.
