University of Dayton Overview

The University of Dayton (UD) is the largest private university in the state of Ohio. A Roman Catholic institution, the school offers more than 70 undergraduate academic programs and more than 50 master’s degree programs. With an enrollment of 7300 full-time undergraduates, it is one of the nation’s 10 largest Catholic institutions of higher learning. It is also the top Catholic university in the country for sponsored scientific and engineering research.


Headquartered in Dayton, Ohio, UD is operated by the Society of Mary religious order. The university’s roots date back to 1850, when St. Mary’s School for Boys opened on a plot of land in Dayton once known as Dewberry Farm. The school became the University of Dayton in 1920. It was America’s first co-educational Catholic university, opening its doors to women in 1935.

The University of Dayton retains more than 2500 full- and part-time employees on its faculty and staff. Among those are about 400 researchers who are employed by UD’s research arm, the University of Dayton Research Institute. The university offers its employees a benefit package that includes life insurance, paid holidays, sick leave and medical, vision and dental plans. Employees also can take advantage of a tuition remission program.
