Overview The Scripps Research Institute is a non-profit organization focusing on biomedical science research. Based in La Jolla, California, it is one of the largest independent institutions of its kind in the world. The institute’s scientists have produced significant advancements in the study and treatment of many disorders, including leukemia, blindness, hemophilia, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer.

The history of the institute dates back to 1924, when the Scripps Metabolic Clinic was established by Ellen Browning Scripps in La Jolla to study diabetes and similar metabolic ailments. During the 1950s and 1960s, the institute broadened it focus and expanded its research facilities, attracting renowned researchers from around the country. The institute opened a second state-of-the-art science center in 2009 in Jupiter, Florida.
