Overview ThyssenKrupp is one of the world’s largest steel manufacturers. The conglomerate, headquartered in Essen, Germany, also produces machinery for elevators and escalators, the automotive industry, and industrial services. A marine division manufactures naval vessels, submarines, and yachts. The newest ThyssenKrupp American facility is a state-of-the-art steel processing plant in Calvert, Alabama opened in December 2010. The plant will employ 2,700 when fully operational.

ThyssenKrupp was formed in 1999 as a result of the merger of two companies, Thyssen AG, started in 1891, and Krupp, founded 1811. Company products have been used in the U.S. since the 1800s when Krupp steel was purchased by the Pennsylvania Railway. In the 1900s company steel was used in the construction of two iconic New York City buildings, the Chrysler building and the Empire State Building.
