2Spend much less time involved in day to day activities of staff. If you hire smart people, trust that they are doing the job well and get involved only when necessary. I'd understand that a lot of what we do has grey area and isn't always going to be black and white.
Consult with people doing the work and not stop at the middle management level. No one in the department I was working in felt they had a voice for anything we were doing and for the decisions that were being made in the restructuring of the department.
2.9The company has a lot of heart and potential, but limits itself with very old thinking. Further, there is a lot of group think - literally everyone must agree and feel comfortable for any action. That said, they are stable and very flexible with schedules. Insurance companies typically don't innovate, so if that's your goal, this might not be a great fit. There are some good people here and it's the largest employer in Portland.
