Sun Microsystems, Inc. was founded in 1982 by Vinod Khasla, Andy Bechtolsheim, Bill Joy, and Scott McNealy. Near the peak in 2006, the firm employed 38,600 people. Products of the firm were servers, workstations, storage systems, and software. From 1987 to 2009, Sun acquired over 50 firms and outside software systems. Sun’s first Unix workstation was generated from an idea by a graduate student at Stanford University, Andy Bechtolsheim. Many of the hardware and software applications that were developed by this firm are still being used and sold by Oracle Corporation. Most web users are familiar with Java. Sun marketed Sun Servers, Sun Storage and Tape and SPARC, which are still marketed by Oracle.

Sun Microsystems careers were international, and there were many opportunities to be pursued. Some engineering groups resided in China, Ireland, Germany, Japan, and Israel. Sun had revenue of $13.8 billion in 2007-2008 but its success had had its ups and downs over the years. Their systems were engineered to work both in the cloud and in a customer data center.
