The state of Ohio was acquired from the British by the United States after the Revolutionary War. It officially became the country's 17th state in 1803. Originally, the region was settled by the French in the 1600s. They found the area good for growing crops and fur trapping. The state's capital and also its largest city is Columbus. The state is a leader in the production of automobiles, jet engines, office machines and steel. Ohio also has a productive agricultural sector. The state's fertile soil produces corn, apples, strawberries and nursery plants. Ohio's cities are culturally vibrant and interesting.
