Overview Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is an independent, applied research and development organization. Established by oil magnate Thomas Slick, Jr. in 1947, its initial mission was to provide contract R&D to industries and the U.S. government. SwRI's early contributions included innovations for the automotive industry, environmental sciences and materials research. The institute quickly grew to become the largest nonprofit of its kind in the United States.

SwRI has its headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, and has offices and laboratories in Utah, Michigan, Minnesota, Maryland, Georgia and Beijing, China. It currently conducts research in space technology, mechanical engineering, applied physics and geolocation, among many other fields. About 4,000 projects are active at any given time across the institute's network. SwRI's annual operating budget exceeds $580 million.
