Sleepy's Anonymous Employee
in Mount Laurel, NJ

"Area was run for the past 10-15 years by two master politicians. These two crooks connived, deceived, lied and manipulated many, many hard working employees and their families. They got rid of their enemies, their rivals - one by one, month by month, district by district, until they were calling the shots from the throne, just like Frank Underwood without the southern accent. These two would always get inside information way in advance from up top without passing it on so they would always have the inside track always in advance. No one really actually knew what these two actually did on a daily basis for this company besides forward emails and go to lunch. Luckily one "consigliere" is now removed from the company after the buyout, but the other still remains in a role similar to Ace Rothstein's character in Casino, where he keeps swapping job titles without being noticed. He was the worst manager I have ever seen in any company I have ever worked in. No training, no business sense, no leadership. Nothing! I cannot believe that Mattress Firm kept this person on. People were speechless! The culture was simple - Your pay and schedule depended on your relationship with bosses . Keep your mouth shut, unless your name ended in a vowel and had a position higher than a District Manger The blatant discrimination towards minority workers, and women was obvious and many employees just keep their mouths closed due to retaliation from their manager. The only way to get promoted to a better store was very easy- $ gifts to your boss or being best friends/cousins with him. You were never rewarded based on merit or success. Many left after the well dried up in 2012 and 2013. Those that are currently working were hand-picked. These people drank the kool-aid, took pay cuts and kept their lips sealed for the transition period. Auditors were fired also."

"Been with Sleepy's for over two years and its a good company to work for. Minimal advancement in company in tri state area, however expansions west and south can be a good fit for someone open to move."
