An IT consultant will work with one or several clients, providing advice on how information technology can help them achieve their business goals. IT consultants can also help organizations overcome IT related problems and find solutions to make their entire IT infrastructure more efficient. Typical work activities include: analyzing a client's requirements, proposing solutions that will meet their needs, providing support when necessary, assisting in the purchase of equipment and software.
Skill Sets: IT consultants need to be able to communicate clearly with their clients. They also should be willing to do a lot of traveling, sometimes to distant locations, in order to meet their clients. As this is a position that is highly technical, an IT consultant will need to have a strong knowledge of different IT systems such as workstations, servers, database solutions, network architecture and more.
Education: An associate's or bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field is necessary. Pursuing additional education in the information technology field is highly recommended as it will allow a candidate to show competency working with various types of IT systems.
Career Path: Obtain a degree related to computer science. Work in progressively important IT roles (network technician, database administrator, etc). Build strong people skills that will help when meeting with clients and understanding their objectives.
