A field service technician provides on-site support to customers and troubleshoots technical hardware and software related issues. On a typical day, a field service technician will help clients solve technical issues by applying problem solving skills to repair computer or electronic equipment on site.
Skillset: Field service technicians must demonstrate strong communication, troubleshooting, and critical thinking abilities. They must be proficient in dealing with computer hardware and software related issues or other electronic products that they may specialize in.
Education: Employers generally require a high school diploma or GED for most positions while some specialized fields may require a degree and/or industry certifications. Some employers may offer on-the-job training as well as certification training.
Career Path: Field service technicians must demonstrate outstanding communication skills and an ability to efficiently troubleshoot electronic hardware and software problems. Pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field and consider getting a master’s degree to increase desirability and promotional opportunities. Industry certifications may also add to qualifications and help build up a resume. Internships and Freelance projects are also a great way to gain experience.
