Architects work with clients to design homes, offices, churches, government buildings, shopping centers and restaurants. They prepare blue prints or drawings of the proposed structure by using computer aided design and drafting software (CADD). Architects assist with choosing contractors and negotiating construction contracts.
Skillsets: Creativity is necessary to create structures that are both beautiful and functional. Communication skills are required to communicate ideas by speaking or writing. Architects need critical thinking skills to correct problems as they arise. They must have the necessary computer skills to use the CADD software.
Education: Architects must earn a professional degree in architecture from a college or university accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. The Bachelor's Degree takes five years to complete. A Master's Degree takes up to five years to complete.
Career Path: Currently, the number of students pursuing architectural degrees is increasing. This means there is a lot of competition for architect positions. Completing an internship will give job candidates an advantage.
