Overview Sam Houston State University (also known as SHSU) is a public university located in Huntsville, Texas. It was founded in 1879 and was named after one of the founders of Texas, Sam Houston. The institution began as a normal school, which is an institute that trains high school graduates to become teachers. As time went by, the type of educational programs offered expanded beyond just teaching and in 1969, the school became a full university.

There are now approximately 18,000 students who attend SHSU. The university's academic programs are separated into 6 colleges. Currently, the university has a College of Business Administration, Education, Criminal Justice, Fine Arts and Mass Communication, Humanities and Social Sciences and Sciences. As of now, 78 bachelor's degree programs are offered by SHSU. 54 master's and 6 doctoral programs are also available.
