Research analysts examine geographical areas to determine what products people want, the type of people who will buy them and at what price. They collect this information through surveys, public opinion polls, interview and focus groups. Research analysts study competitors to determine their sales, prices and marketing techniques. Next, research analysts use this information to adjust marketing strategies as necessary.


Skillset: Analytical skills are necessary to understand the information and data gathered through market research. Research analysts must have strong communication skills to present the information to clients and coworkers. Critical thinking skills are needed to look at the data and develop the best marketing strategy for their client.


Education: In order to enter the field of research analysts, one must have a bachelor's degree in statistics, market research, computer science or math. Some positions require a master's degree.


Career Path: While in college, future research analysts will benefit from internships in sales or marketing. This will give graduates an edge over those students who did not complete an internship. Some research analysts go on to become college professors.
