"I enjoy being a Purchasing Agent because it offers an opportunity to be educated every day. Purchasing affects every department in a company and every supplier they have. They can mean the difference between profitability and loss and have the opportunity and responsibility to make that difference meaningful. This gives an opportunity to take personal pride and gain a sense of achievement in everything you do."

Purchasing Agent at Sakti3
in Ann Arbor, MI

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Great experience, but nothing I would ever go back to."

What do you like about working at Sakti3?

"Pros: Aside from the CEO, the COO, and the Finance Manager every associate within the company is amazing to work with! Wholesome breakfasts are provided once every week during the company's Sync meeting with our CEO. The work is challenging and every position within the company allows for personal growth and development"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"I don't recommend taking a job with this company if you plan on having time to devote to your family or your social life."

What don't you like about working at Sakti3?

"The CEO is more of a politician than a business leader. She claims to have created an amazing culture within the company using non-threatening tactics and has years of experience growing people. The culture is mock-worthy and the culture she has created is more of a cult-like experience where everyone, including the COO and Finance Manager, pretends to drink the Kool-aid. We all enjoy working with each other, but find her personality to be very Jekyll and Hyde. She loves to humiliate people by excoriating them in large groups and uses her weekly Sync time to put herself up on a pedestal. She inserts herself into every project that goes on in the company and obsesses over details such as font size, and text placement on Powerpoint slides. These OCD tactics tend to slow down efficiency, bring down morale and increase frustration. The CEO claims to have a photographic memory, but consistently forgets directions that she has given or emails that she has written. The COO of the company pretends to have the little guy's interest at heart, but never walks the walk. He has a tendency to micro-manage and borderline harrass his employees while they are attempting to complete projects or tasks. The Finance Manager is abrasive, rude, and condescending. She has absolutely no customer service skills and is willing to place blame on anyone but herself. She lacks a personality and should not be allowed to interact with people inside or outside of the company. The average hours worked by the technical staff are between 11-12+ hours a day. There were promises of expanding and hiring associates for other shifts, but instead the company laid off over 26% of their workforce and increased the workload for everyone left. They used the employees to prepare the company for a downsize and then gave them their pink slips when they were through with them. Management lied to the staff saying that there was plenty of work to go around when questions started to get asked. The CEO offered stock options to every associate within the company and tries to use the owner mentality to guilt us into working longer hours or take on more work. In reality, the stock options offered to employees without a management or engineering title amount to very little and are not worth the effort she is requesting from front-line staff. She preaches about being transparent, honest, and logical, but hides behind closed doors all day while advertising an open door policy. She demands appreciation, recognition, and thanks and when it is not given she will remind you to say thank you or to ask her how she is doing."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Be realistic about what an individual can accomplish in a typical work day. An 11-12+ hour shift a few times a week is acceptable, but asking people to sacrifice time with their families, friends and or give up a social life is ridiculous. Don't obssess over the details. You have hired intelligent people who know how to do their jobs, so let them! Don't use fear tactics and humiliation to get what you want. You only turn the culture you've created into something to mock, the most mock-worthy thing being yourself. Don't demand or request respect. It comes to those who are worthy of receiving it. Don't lecture. If you want to continue being a professor, then you should never have started a business. Employees want the facts, not your opinion. Don't pretend to be something that you're not. Photographic memory is something that can be learned and if you cannot remember an email that you wrote, a task that you've given, or the name of one of your employee's children, then you probably don't have a eidetic memory."

Purchasing Agent at Multi Sales
in La Palma, CA

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"This company has an unreasonable GM who manages via fear and humiliation."

What do you like about working at Multi Sales?

"The company has good benefits and a casual dress code, and there are some good people there. They have merit based quarterly bonuses. Very few employees earn them, but if you work hard and have a service minded attitude, your manager can reward you. There is an employee discount program that can save you a lot of money if you ever need to buy a new garage door or related parts and equipment. The company has a good location, close to the 91 freeway."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you are applying for a purchasing position at MultI Sales, I hope you enjoy learning on your own with very little support and training from a manager who is almost never available and who will let you take the blame for his own mistakes when the pressure is on. He'll change his story and claim he didn't instruct you to do something a certain way when he's in the hot seat. It's sad because otherwise he's a very nice guy and not unpleasant to work for. But his unwillingness to take full responsibility outweighs all of his positive attributes as a boss. You also must enjoy being micromanaged by the company's general manager, who will repeatedly insult you in front of co-workers, telling you you're stupid and incompetent (in spite of your earning merit based bonuses for your exemplary job performance). After his escalating harassment fails to break your spirit, and instead of quitting, you start putting in more and more hours without pay to try to keep up with the impossible workload, eventually he will tell you that you're being paid way too much and finally will let you go as a reward for your dedication and hard work. This is a recurring pattern for buyers at this company! This general manager oversteps the spineless manager of the purchasing department and he tries to micromanage the purchasing department, but he doesn't have any experience in purchasing and doesn't understand the first thing about running a successful purchasing department. The actual manager of the purchasing department is afraid for his own job, so he doesn't do anything to stop this; he enables it. As long as this General Manager is there--his initials are T.H.--I don't think it's possible to be successful in a purchasing role in this company. If all of this sounds good to you, then good luck. If you are someone who works hard, does a good job, and takes ownership of your work and responsibility for your actions, and you have any self respect whatsoever, then I would recommend you do not interview at all for a purchasing position with this company because you will soon become just another statistic in a long line of former buyers."

What don't you like about working at Multi Sales?

"This company has a very bad pattern: In approximately 4 years, they have burned through 7 buyers in a purchasing department of only 3. You do the math. Something is very wrong there. The general manager rules by intimidation, fear, and humiliation. Most people in the company are constantly looking for someone else to blame mistakes on because they are so afraid of being fired and/or being humiliated in front of their peers at the next meeting. It's very difficult to function productively and work together as a team in an environment with this kind of fear and anxiety constantly present. One very minor thing that never bothered me personally, but that some employees complain about in private, is the rotating schedule to clean the employee kitchen once a month. If you're lazy and/or don't like cleaning up the messes of inconsiderate co-workers, you won't like having to clean the kitchen once a month at the end of your workday."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Expand the purchasing department to add at least one additional person, and get the general manager to take a step back and stop putting an impossible workload on the buyers that no one can fulfill without working 24/7. (Ideally I would say get rid of the general manager entirely, as he is going to cause every quality employee to leave eventually.)"
