Postdoctoral Fellow at Boys Town
in Boys Town, NE

What do you like about working at Boys Town?

"People here work hard, but no value is placed on looking busy. Stress occurs as appropriate but is not an everyday occurrence. People are allowed to have families and lives outside of work. Showing up at 8:00 and leaving at 5:00 is practiced by the majority of my colleagues."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Show that you're eager and talented. Be willing to be challenged. Don't show fear. They can smell fear. Show that you are willing to jump up, solve problems, and get things done. Show that you know something about Boys Town and its history and that you find that history inspiring. Be genki. (I suspect that you can be more geeky than genkI if you are interviewing for an IT position, but in youth care, not so.)"

What don't you like about working at Boys Town?

"As mentioned, I'm not happy about the way sexual orientation and gender issues are handled here. I suspect there are historical reasons for this and I have reason to believe things may change in a decade or two. There is an emphasis on drinking the Kool-Aid around here that is in large measure very positive, but also has slightly creepy implications from time to time. As I said, it's not bad here, but there's some room for improvement."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"The one hunk of grit in the oyster here is that sexual orientation / gender issues are not very well handled. There is a public insistence on diversity that more or less boils down to ethnic diversity only. Training materials include language that is disparaging of non-heterosexuality, though that language is not emphasized. There is a low level of systemic sexism in some corners. It's far from awful here, though it's not at all perfect."
