It was founded in 1928 in Manila by legislative act after a devastating typhoon made communications among family members and friends living in different parts of the islands all but impossible not only within the country itself but also internationally. The fixed-line network established by PLDT enabled residents of the Philippines to be linked by a reliable radiotelephone services with the rest of the globe for the first time in its history. Although World War II left the nation's telecommunications system in shambles once again, PLDT was able to restore, improve and expand its system by 1953.

Headquartered in Makati City, Philippines, today the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company is involved in providing customers with fixed line, wireless and information and communications technology as one of the most diversified telecommunications companies anywhere in the world.
