Phoenix House Overview

Phoenix House is a nonprofit organization that provides alcohol and substance abuse treatment and prevention services. Headquartered in New York City, it operates in 10 states offering its more than 16,000 clients outpatient and residential services including evaluation, detoxification, day programs and after-school programs for teenagers, and programs to address mental health problems.

The organization had its beginnings in 1967 when a group of addicts in a New York hospital recovery program moved in together to provide mutual support. In 1972, Phoenix House was founded using an approach to treatment developed by Mitchell S. Rosenthal, a psychiatrist with the Addiction Services Agency of New York City. In 1983, Phoenix House opened a residential academy for teenagers with substance abuse problems. They now operate academies in seven states. The U.S. Department of Justice designated the Phoenix House Academy a “model program” in 2005.
