Headquartered in New York City, it operates in 10 states offering its more than 16,000 clients outpatient and residential services including evaluation, detoxification, day programs and after-school programs for teenagers, and programs to address mental health problems.
The organization had its beginnings in 1967 when a group of addicts in a New York hospital recovery program moved in together to provide mutual support. In 1972, Phoenix House was founded using an approach to treatment developed by Mitchell S. Rosenthal, a psychiatrist with the Addiction Services Agency of New York City. In 1983, Phoenix House opened a residential academy for teenagers with substance abuse problems. They now operate academies in seven states.
