PennDot (Pennsylvania Department of Transportation) is the premier road maintenance agency in the state. The agency oversees more than 40,000 miles of roads and is responsible for ensuring that traffic moves smoothly on every one of those miles. The organization is headquartered in Harrisburg and is especially active during the winter, when blinding snowstorms often pummel the state from end to end. Workers are responsible for ensuring that all of the interstates, including the all-important Pennsylvania Turnpike, remain operable.
PennDot is further charged with ensuring that registrations and vehicle titles remain current. Beyond this, the agency has recently benefited from an uptick in state funds, which have been used to repair bridges and tunnels that have been deemed deficient in some manner. Several of the mountain tunnels on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will eventually need to be refurbished or replaced. The state is looking at cost effective ways to bring these projects to fruition.
Workers at PennDot receive some quite nice annual benefits. Men and women receive an entire suite of health benefits and are also given several paid holidays each year. Tuition reimbursement allows workers to continue to pursue their educational dreams. There are a range of excellent part-time and full-time schools in the Harrisburg area.
