"Not the best place to work. I've had many jobs and just started working here a little less than a year ago. Corporate is ridiculous and makes you follow people around the store and "upsell" them stuff they don't need or even want. Which usually results in a return. This company is failing as a whole, and they truly take it out on their employees. We have systems of measuring how good an employee is by "UPTS" (Units per transaction), Conversion (how many people come in and out of the store and buy things) and "DTPS" (Dollar amount per transaction) A lot of these times these numbers are terrible with no fault to the employee. If a customer returns something or multiple items, each item counts as a negative UPT. If a customer only purchased one item, that brings us down as well. Reaching conversion is almost impossible on some days. People walking in and out of the store, large families coming in with 4-20 people and only one person makes a purchase and sometimes no purchase and they just trash the entire store. The problem with this "number" system is that if someone's numbers aren't good enough they don't get promoted even when it's promised, and you can even get terminated or they will demote you. Another thing they love to do is "promote" somebody to an ASL (assistant store leader/ assistant manager), or a SL (store leader/manager) and make them do the work as one for months, sometimes even years but not pay them the compensation until they "prove they can do it". Why would you promote someone in the first place if you didn't think they where capable? Starting in the company you make minimum wage and they don't give raises at all for employees who do good unless your "numbers" are astronomical. But the CEO of Payless makes an amazing 1.1 million dollars per year when I bet he could not do well with his "numbers" himself. It's comical and the way they run this place is exactly why 2,000 stores are closing."

"I worked for Payless ShoeSource from 2014-2016. It's not a place I would suggest unless you need a starting job. There're a lot of rude and condescending customers, who complain about the prices, demand discounts for no reason, and just make a mess of the store. So, typical retail. Corporate is stupid, in that they'll force employees to stalk the customers around the store, scaring the customers away. Sales and rewards goals have to be met, otherwise the DM will call and chew you out. Management expects one person to do a task that would take two people eight hours to finish, in four hours, all while taking care of customers and meeting sales goals. They'll work you to the bone and you'll never see a raise. Equipment isn't always safe."
