Overview Oakland University is a public university located in Oakland County, Michigan. Founded in 1957, it is the only larger research university located in Oakland County. The institution began in the 1950s when Matilda Dodge Wilson and Alfred Wilson donated a 1,500 acre estate to Michigan State University. This included the land, several buildings and a cash donation of $2 million.

As of 2011, there were 19,500 students attending Oakland University. There are currently 133 bachelor's degree programs and 128 graduate programs offered. The university also offers professional certificates for those who wish to expand their skills in a very specific field. One fact worth noting is the quality of Oakland University's School of Business Administration. It holds AACSB International accreditation in both business and accounting programs. Its Executive MBA program that has concentrations in health care is unique in the state. The university recently opened a medical school in 2011.
