New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) is the primary government agency responsible for the the city's vast transportation network with the goal of maintaining the infrastructure system in a "safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible" way--ensuring safe movement of goods and people in the densely populated metropolitan area.

The agency is responsible for regular maintenance and rehabilitation efforts to keep the transportation system working in a safe and efficient manner and keeping up with its overarching goals of minimizing congestion and encouraging use of public transportation. The agency is also responsible for several education programs.

The DOT has offices in all five boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Staten Island) including various field offices and subdivisions. The DOT works with various NYC government agencies including the NY Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Port Authority, Department of Design and Construction (DDC), NYC Department of Buildings (DOB), and NYC Department of Finance to meet its comprehensive goals.
