"Don't plan any long vacations."

What don't you like about working at Northrop Grumman?

"Silo structure (functional area) of organization. Company is not project oriented. Vacation / sick time / personal time off policy is not very good, and seems to get worse until one hits 15 years of service. Management is too willing to give the customer an unrealistically optimistic construction schedule."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Be tougher in negotiations with the customer, be more generous with personal time off for employees (even if wages go a little lower)."

"The day I arrived, I was asked to think of Mission Impossible. I was shunted from the job I had accepted and welcomed as the head of the operating system and database functions. I rose to the challenge and succeeded in getting a stable underpining for the project."

"Act like you don't care how your software will be used."

What don't you like about working at Northrop Grumman?

"I was assigned to the MIFIASS project that had been misconceived and poorly defined. The hardware requirements were preposterous and drove illogical operational functionality."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Listen to your systems engineers and evaluate the project before you allocate resources to an unworkable concept."

"Excellent pension!!! Excellent benefits, 40 hr work week, no pressure, very stable work conditions."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Anticipate low-ball offers. Don't waste time interviewing if you are going there for a good starting salary, go there for long term benefits like pension, medical/dental/vision, and 401K. Advancement doesn't happen ahead of a drawn out schedule... but if you do your job, you advance like clockwork. It's a very secure workplace for engineers."

What don't you like about working at Northrop Grumman?

"Opportunity for advancement was little to none. Performance was not compensated. Had to carry a lot of dead wood poor performers. Filthy work conditions. Antiquated infrastructure. Dangerous health hazards (asbestos)."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Recognize performance and compensate it. Facilitate transfers to other departments. Clean up the working conditions."

"Very stable dependable employer for professionals. You could work there for your entire career, leave with an exceptional pension, never having been exceptional at anything, just so long as you don't make a very serious professional blunder."

"Little professional growth opportunity once you show you get things done. Managers blocked transfers of good performers and encouraged dead-wood to move on."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Prevent managers/supervisors from blocking transfers. Provide performance incentives for engineers. Break the steel workers union driven just good enough is ok culture. Give TANGIBLE recognition for exceptional performance at all levels."
